India ink dip pen12/7/2023 ![]() You can always burn the nibs with a lighted match or cigarette lighter, and that will sometimes get them working better. ![]() If it doesn’t drip off, it is too thick if it runs off, it is too thin and will separate or bleed. For ink to be the right consistency to write with easily, you should be able to put some on the end of a palette knife and it should drip of just nicely from the end of the knife. If your nib is flowing well and your ink is the right consistency you should be able to write your full name and most of your address before having to re-load with ink. I can’t speak too much about Indian Ink, because I don’t use it. It can also be wiped with denatured alcohol or similar, but never use Turpentine, as the Turps will meld the plasic handle to the nib, and you will never get the nib out again. To do this, I just use a Kleenex Tissue and wipe the nib thoroughly with that. You will need to clean the nib every little while, as the ink can dry quite quickly in the curved back of the nib. You can load up to where that hole starts, but not any further. When loading the pen with ink, never but NEVER, cover the little hole in the nib with ink - that stops the flow of ink very quickly. I also use Hunt nibs pretty much exclusively, because they are the best IMHO. I use a dip pen when I am penning a design on porcelain, which I know is different to W/colour Paper, but the same method is used. First of all, buy yourself a Watercolour Pad to practice on - it will be a lot easier than Rice Paper. I am sure others will have hints as well. I will try to answer some of your queries for you. The B5 & B6 I couldnt’ really keep the ink flowing. On the 22B & 56 the split in the nib seemed to catch in the paper & picked up a lot of fuzz. I added a tiny bit of water, which helped some, but still not great results. ![]() First, the ink did not seem to flow off the nib, It was real scratchy. I used some Higgins India Ink & rice paper (smooth side) I had on hand.Īre there any special trick/tips to get these to work well? I had a frustrating first run.
